Description

Relationship of Today’s Pornography to Promoting Sexual and Relational Health

For years, discussions around pornography focused primarily on its correlation (or not) to sexually aggressive behavior, but the current research focuses on a much broader – but related – set of impacts on relationships, intimacy, sexual functioning and other factors. All of these impact emotional and social well-being critical to a healthy sense of self and healthy relationships. This session also highlights research on the impact of pornography on children/youth who start viewing it more often and at younger ages than past generations and are also demonstrating more problematic sexual behaviors. The research on the impact on brain development and brain functioning adds to the relevance of revisiting the impact of today’s Internet pornography, not only on clients, but more broadly on prevention of sexual harm and promotion of sexual health.

Keeping Professionals Healthy

This session addresses the potential harm from secondary trauma and vicarious traumatization related to doing this work. It also includes information on the risk and protective factors for individuals. However, keeping professionals that do this work healthy has moved from being understood as the responsibility of each individual to that of organizations, so this session also includes information on risk and protective factors for organizations and steps to work place well-being.
